However, the fact that this should be done in the master is an artifact of an earlier time. In those, compression will help you actually hear the music and speech.

Watching TV in a noisy downtown apartment. More compression and less dynamic range is beneficial for certain environments.

Since everyone is listening of crappy earbuds, they compress the hell out of it and destroy all dynamic range. The original idea of 24-bit 192hz flac was for vinyl rips, where hypothetically you might be getting more information. You can’t transcode mp3s without killing the quality so if you ever want to convert formats (like for a mp3 player), you should stick with flac (16-bit, 48hz). That being said, I think flac is generally a good choice for a music collection. This is also why modern vinyl releases sound a lot better than digital: they are mastered differently since its assumed everyone is going to be listening on good equipment.

This is why when downloading music you should avoid remasters (there are some exceptions, like the Beatles mono and stereo boxed sets that came out awhile ago) and go for the first edition presses. The reason why a lot of recent digital music sounds bad is because of the intentionally terrible mastering. You can only the difference between mp3 and flac at shitty bitrates no one uses anymore (like 120). But, like AM radio, don't mistake 'OK' for high fidelity.Problem with music sounding bad doesn’t really have much to do with the distributed format: V0, V1, or 320 mp3s should sound pretty much the same compared to 16-bit flac. So, yes, when you play an MP3 you do hear you favorite music, and it sounds OK. And as good as the MUSIC sounded, there is no one claiming AM radio is high fidelity. I've spend many a long drunken smokey night laying back enjoying my favorite music on AM radio. The music revolution was built around AM radio play.

Keep in mind that MP3 is sort of the AM radio of sound (though certainly much better than AM radio). One for serious listening and one for casual listening. But serious high quality HiFi listening is not the place for MP3.Īssuming you have the disk space, it is not a choice between one or the other, you can have both. MP3 do have a place in the world of music I use them myself.

Most people will save FLAC and similar for home listening on a good stereo, and keep copies in high bitrate MP3 for compact portable listening. However, to me, MP3 on a good stereo sound dull and lifeless, though again the degree of compression matters. However, if you can't hear the difference, then I guess it doesn't matter. If you can't hear the difference, it is like because you don't know what to listen for. Though I think if you are above about 192k, the MP3's are about as good as they can get. The same it true of MP3, we compromise the information for the sake of compact size. But we accept that compromise in quality in exchange for an extremely compact size. You will see that at normal viewing size they look about the same, but if you look closely or zoom in, you can see how terribly compromised the JPG is. If you have a digital camera, and I mean a real one, not a phone camera, take a picture in TIFF or RAW format, load it into a photo editing program and save it as a JPG, now compare the original to the JPG. Yet, in the JPG compression data was lost, you just have to look very very closely to see the difference. Ever seen a nice photo in JPG format? How did it look? Pretty good I'm guessing.
